We love spirits here at the Spirit Show, but Rum has a special place as a particular favourite. Rum Punch Day gives another opportunity to enjoy this beautiful spirit, not that you ever need a reason for Rum…

The word punch is a loanword from Hindi panch and the drink was made from five different ingredients: spirit, sugar, lemon, water, and tea or spices.

Our preferred method of Rum punch is the Bajan Rum Punch, one of the oldest rum punches. This uses the recipe of “One part sour, two parts sweet, three parts strong & four of weak”

The traditional Bajan Rum Punch recipe is:

  • 1 part Lime Juice
  • 2 part Sugar Syrup
  • 3 parts Rum (preferably Barbados Rum)
  • 4 parts Water

Nowadays you can stick to the method & mix any ingredients you’d like to match your taste, making it as sweet or sour as you want.

An easy way to mix this up is to add Passion Fruit juice instead of water, but there are hundreds of varieties possible.

Here are a few of our favourite Rum punches, simple yet very effective ¦

Matugga Spiced Rum Punch

Matugga Spiced Rum is a small-batch, copper pot-distilled craft rum that is distilled in Cambridgeshire from East African sugarcane molasses. The award-winning rum is embellished with a Masala Chai blend of six fragrant botanicals – black tea, ginger, cloves, vanilla, cardamom and cinnamon, a popular spice mix in East Africa.

  • 50 ml Matugga Spiced Rum
  • 125 ml pineapple juice
  • mango puree (optional)
  • To garnish: star anise, cinnamon stick, pineapple leaf.

Combine the spiced rum, pineapple juice, mango puree in a cocktail shaker and shake well. Strain into a cocktail glass with ice and serve garnished with a star anise, cinnamon stick and pineapple leaf.

Bayou Pom Pom Punch

  • 30 ml Bayou Silver Rum
  • 20 ml Pomegranate Juice
  • 20 ml Lemonade
  • 10 ml Lemon Juice
  • Fresh berries & Lemon wheels

Combine the rum, pomegranate juice, lemon juice and lemonade, stir well. Garnish with the berries and lemon wheels and serve over ice.

Spirit Show Rum Punch

  • 30ml Ron Cubay Carta Blanca
  • 20ml Lychee Juice
  • 20ml Watermelon Juice
  • 20ml Grenadine
  • 10ml Lime Juice
  • Garnish fresh mint

Serve long over ice. Having a party? Why not make a big batch and blend with ice to make a seriously good frozen treat!
