Six perfect Father’s Day Whiskies
Guide to different types of Dad and the perfect Whisky to match them with
As everyone knows Dads are notoriously difficult to buy for, either they already have everything or they don’t really want anything. But we know all Dads love Whisky, and another addition to the bar at home will be much more welcome than another addition to the sock drawer. What type of Whisky you buy is extremely important, so we’ve given six different whiskies below to match with your Dads personality.
The Old School Dad loves to talk about how everything was better back in his time. Comparing how society has changed and how many old-fashioned values have been lost.
Take your Dad back in time with Berry Bros & Rudd Hanger 9th Edition. So called because of the shade of clothes he wore as a young man, William “Blue” Hanger, Lord Coleraine, was a loyal customer of Berry Bros & Rudd at the end of the 18th century, and the best dressed man of his day. This exceptional and very limited Blended Malt is just as impeccably turned out, with bewitching aromas of orange peel, vanilla and peat-smoke. The palate is luscious and complex leading to the fruity, smoky finale.
The Traditional British Dad likes his tea strong and his whisky with just a touch of water. He taught you the difference between lager and ale and the importance of always having a good scotch at home.
The perfect tipple for your traditional Dad will be the Glengoyne 15 year old Highland Single Malt. Established in 1833, Glengoyne’s multi award-winning Highland Single Malt created with time and care, using the same methods passed down for generations. There are seven whiskies in the Glengoyne collection, from a 10 Year Old to a 25 Year Old.
Complex, sweet and rounded with a spicy oak finish. This is the taste of distilling slower than anyone else in Scotland, and of barley we dry by air, never peat. The flavours develop in hand-selected sherry casks balancing deep character with light vanilla notes.
Colour – Bright gold.
Nose – Initial hit of sweet lemon gives way to warm toffee popcorn.
Taste – Oily and mouth coating. Sweet citrus becomes walnuts and a nip of cinnamon.
Finish – Drying with subtle oak.
The Alt Dad has the greatest indie rock vinyl collection teamed with effortless style, able to whip out t-shirts from some of the most Epic gigs of the 60’s.
Impress your alternative Dad with Smokehead Islay Single Malt Scotch. Smokehead is a rich, seaweedy and intensely peaty Islay Single Malt Whisky.
The flavour is fresh, fruity and immense, with notes of sherry, iodine, toffee, smoke and sea salt all fighting for recognition. A really vigorous whisky not for the faint hearted … savour and enjoy!
Nose – Heavy smoke and peat. Amazing richness. Lemon, fresh ginger, plum jam. Salty and spicy.
Body – Like a cannonball – hits the palate at once with cocoa, peat and some honey sweetness then explodes with peppery spice and more earthy peat. Spreads to all the areas of your mouth with more peat and light sweetness.
Finish – Even more peat, spice, mandarin – then dries up. When you think it’s all over the peat comes back to hit you again.
When your dad has more Instagram followers than you, he’s most likely a Hipster Dad. He can be found hanging out at the latest pop up bars religiously taking photos of everything that comes before he tucks in.
Treat your Dad like a King with The King’s Ginger, a liqueur specifically formulated by Berry Bros & Rudd in 1903 for King Edward VII. Rich and zesty, the liqueur was created to stimulate and revivify His Majesty during morning rides in his new horseless carriage, a Daimler. It has been appreciated by bon viveurs, sporting gentlemen and high-spirited ladies ever since. Enjoy it from a hip flask, mix with whisky or sparkling wine or perhaps try it in a delicious cocktail, ideas for all seasons here.
The Modern Dad teams his contemporary fashion sense with the latest gadgets and his knowledge of technology and trends puts you to shame.
Treat your Dad to the Tamdhu 10 year old Speyside single Malt Scotch Whisky. Re-launched in 2013 in its unique and stylish bottle, Tamdhu Distillery was established in 1897. Tamdhu’s collection consists of a 10 Year Old and a Batch Strength malt, both of which are matured exclusively in the finest sherry oak casks.
In 1897, Tamdhu Distillery was born of its founders’ Can-Dhu spirit, and 200 years of Scottish industry. Today, Tamdhu 10 Year Old embodies the same intrepid approach. Matured exclusively in sherry oak casks, we ensure every drop is as magnificent now as it was then.
Nose – The softness of vanilla and sugared almonds, balanced by fresh oak and cinnamon.
Palate – Bursting with fruit and spice gently yielding to toffee and the richness of sherry oak.
Finish – Fruit and vanilla linger, becoming pleasantly drying finally unveiling the merest wisp of peat smoke.
You probably have fond memories of your new school dad working hard but still finding time to help out with your homework in the evenings, and cooking up a storm over the weekends.
The Glenrothes is only released when it reaches peak maturity, regardless of the time it has spent in the cask. We call this a Vintage. The Vintage 2001 combines the maturity of oaky vanilla, with the fullness of ripe black cherries and has a lingering, typically Glenrothes finish of soft spices. It has wonderful length and depth, hugely satisfying and an excellent demonstration of the Malt Master’s skill and dedication to the art of wood management.
